Global Civis Club
In an effort to "spread the word" of Global Civis we have chosen to allow the creation of school based clubs taking on the name Global Civis. These clubs will utilize character education techniques while implementing the ideals ofGlobal Civis.
Two central Florida high schools will serve as test locations during the 2010-2011 academic year, they are WInter Park High School & East River High School. If you are interested in hosting a Global Civis club in your school please e-mail our director Tom Beard.
Amicus Brief
The Amicus Brief Project requires the Amicus Brief Project Team (ABPT) to select a Supreme Court case on the current docket of either the Florida Supreme Court or SCOTUS. Once selected, the facts and legal questions of the case will need to be researched to gain the full understanding required to create an amicus brief.
Former Chief Justice of SCOTUS, Chief William H. Rehnquist defines an amicus curie as "... a phrase that literally means "friend of the court" -- someone who is not a party to the litigation, but who believes that the court's decision may affect its interest." You will be required to write an argument that supports one side of the selected case.
The ABPT members will be required to meet after school and during lunch, to complete some serious research, to learn how to write and submit an amicus brief and complete the actual document. If the team is lucky enough to select the appropriate case we will actually submit the brief to the appropriate court.
A.R. 18
The 10th Amendment to the Constitution states, "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."
Beginning in the fall of 2010, A.R. 18 is a high school program designed to implement the 10th Amendment in having the state of Florida lead the way in implementing automatic voter registration when state citizens turn eighteen. The goal of this project is to have high school students understand the role they may play in the design and implementation of public policy as well as helping all young adults through the state of Florida in their active participation in the American democratic process.
If you are intrested in participating in this project please let us know and we will see how best to have YOU be apart of this amazing effort.
Adelante
Global Civis has taken on the role of facilitator with the Latino Leadership ¡Adelante! America and AT&T and LULAC initiative to provide leadership opportunities to moderately at-risk students who require extra guidance and mentorship to successfully complete high school. ¡Adelante! targets at-risk 8-10 graders, highlighting the importance of education through the development and cultivation of optimism, resilience and academic excellence.
Using examples of community empowerment, ¡Adelante! provides participating students with positive alternatives to gangs, violence, and dropping out of school. Technology is infused throughout the course of program by incorporating the use of blogs.
Key components of the ¡Adelante! America are recruitment, Engage meet-ups, a service project, and the leadership conference. All components of the ¡Adelante! initiative will collectively empower participants to:
1. Increase rates of on-time promotion to the next grade;
2. Improve the academic performance of the students as measured by grades and test scores;
3. Improve interpersonal relationships between the children and their peers, teachers, other adults, and family members;
4. Reduce the dropout rate;
5. Reduce juvenile delinquency and involvement in gangs by the youth; and
6. Achieve the target graduation rate for its participants.
