Have you ever asked yourself why public schools have bells to start and stop class or why the school year typically goes from late August to early June? These antiquated educational tools no longer have a role in Florida's public school education and yet each school year, they are back.
Since 2000 our state government has illustrated their knowledge that something more needs to be done. They have adopted the A+ and A++ grading system; they pushed for the adoption of the class size amendment and they have allowed for school vouchers. Although these methods are limited in scope, they are pure in knowing that something more needs to be done. In 2010 both houses of the Florida legislature passed bills that among other things, called for merit based pay for teachers. This would have become law had it not been stopped by the veto of then governor Charlie Crist.

As teachers we must accept the fact that merit based pay will become a reality in Florida. We should also NEVER accept our future, student’s future, educations future to be limited by this short sited plan. Unlike the leadership in Florida, educators must be proactive with public education, not reactive.

We at Global Civis have begun the process of speaking to teachers throughout the state, creating lists of suggestions and lobbying for those suggestions to be included in any education bill that enters the Florida legislature. We have a Facebok page for you to follow, a Twitter page for you comment on and a You Tube channel for you to submit your videos to. If you are interested in becoming part of the movement or if you have a suggestion for improvements to public education in Florida please let us know by sending an email to letsreformeducation@globalcivis.com

If YOU are a teacher and YOU want a voice we ask that you put together a short video to introduce yourself, tell how long you have been teaching and describe ONE reform you would like to see in public education. Then e-mail it to letsreformed@gmail.com and we will post it for you.

 The story of the Starfish

There is a story of two friends walking along the beach and coming across hundreds of starfish that have washed up on the shore. The sun is blazing and it is obvious that without some help to find their way back into the water, the starfish will die.

One friend picks a starfish up and tosses it back into the ocean. The second friend askes why he did that pointing out that there is far too many starfish to help them all. The first friend acknowledges him and says, “I may not be able to make a difference to every starfish but I made a giant difference to that starfish.”

     Educational reform is our starfish!
